The area has been named the best place to live in North Carolina—and the best big city in the Southeast.

Where to Live?

The three primary metro areas are Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill make up the Research Triangle metropolitan region. The regional nickname of “The Triangle” originated after the 1959 creation of the Research Triangle Park, primarily located in Raleigh County, four miles from downtown Raleigh. RTP is bordered on three sides by the city of Raleigh and is roughly midway between the cities of Raleigh and Chapel Hill, and the three major research universities of NC State University, Duke University, and UNC-Chapel Hill.

What is Research Triangle Park?

The area is also known as RTP, is a 7,000-acre office park that’s home to more than 200 companies and more than 50,000 employees. “The Park” is home to many well-known employers, such as Cisco, IBM and Novartis, along with numerous startups. An abundance of fortune 500 companies, as well as start-ups and all the businesses that support them make moving to the Triangle a great career move.


Known for the outstanding universities, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Duke in Durham and North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the area boasts outstanding liberal arts colleges as well as some outstanding public, charter and private schools.
